Bright Future for Gatwick Airport
BAA Gatwick Airport is the 10th busiest international airport in the world. Gatcwick is the UK’s second largest airport, behind Heathrow, and is considered to be the worlds busiest singe runway airport.
Gatwick celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008 having been opened in 1958 by a very young Queen Elizabeth II. The name ‘Gatwick’ is, like many British place names, derived from old Anglo-Saxon words, in this case meaning ‘goat farm’ or ‘goat dairy farm’ to be more accurate.
Gatwick was the first UK airport to have a direct rail link and its own railway station. As the popularity of Gatwick as a transport hub has increased so the airport has expanded to accommodate the increase in passengers. In 1984 the airport opened a new air traffic control tower and a new non-stop rail service between Gatwick and Victoria was started. The new North terminal at Gatwick was opened by the Queen in 1988.
In 2000 the airport inderwent further expansion with an extension to the South terminal departure lounge and a similar extension to the North terminal departure lounge was completed in 2005. The South Terminal departure lounge underwent further work in 2008 with a further extension and a new security search area.
Gatwick currently operates flights to more than 220 destinations worldwide and over 80 airlines use the airport. Some of the most popular destinations from Gatwick are actually closer to home with many passengers using Gatwick for domestic, European and Irish flights. Airlines including US operators Delta, Northwest and Continental now offer a huge selection of long-haul flights to all areas of the world. The airport has received numerous awards including the 2008 Travel Bulletin ‘Best UK Airport’ award for the fifth year running.
Travellers are spoiled with an abundance of Gatwick parking facilities or they can use the excellent train services running direct to the airport. The airport is jam packed with top class restaurants and a variety of high street shops. It looks like Gatwick will continue to grow in popularity as a major international transport hub.

Is flying really the worst contributor to climate change?
The government have announced plans to increase the tax on air travel to over double the current percentage, in a bid to cut carbon emissions. This new ‘green tax’ will apply to long haul flights and will supposedly be spent on green issues and reducing global warming. It sounds like a good plan, even if it does mean we’d have to pay more to fly, after all aviation emissions are a huge factor in climate change and one of the main areas for concern, right?
Well, no actually they’re not. I’m not trying to say that aircraft emissions are a myth or that they don’t contribute, because they’re not and they do. But looking at the figures it’s clear that air travel counts for only two per cent of our total CO2 emissions. Yes, there is certainly room for improvement, and any way to reduce carbon emissions can only be a good thing, but is doubling the tax on air passengers who want to see the world or take tropical or Caribbean holidays really the way to go about it?
I suppose the theory is that luxury holidays are not a necessity in life and those who can afford them can afford to pay extra to help alleviate the environmental cost, but the bottom line is this scheme is not reducing global warming at all, it’s just charging people more for it. An alternative scheme, proposed by people who work in the travel industry, suggested that instead of taxing passengers for flying the government could instead tax the airlines for any seats left empty. Considering that on average 1/3 of all seats in the sky remain empty, this plan could have actually made a difference by encouraging airlines to run less flights and ensure that planes were always as full as possible.
Unsurprisingly this proposal fell on deaf ears. Maybe it was realised that although it could cause a serious reduction in carbon emissions, there was far less scope for making money out of it than taxing passengers more. As far as saving the planet goes, although airline pollution could and should be reduced, before this can be done people’s attitudes need to change. And in my experience there is no better way to change the way you feel about the planet than to see it – whether you go exploring in the rainforest, backpacking in Australia or just chilling out on a beach in Jamaica, holidays open people’s eyes to the world and let you see what’s out there worth saving.
Important In Air Travels
You’ve made all your travel agreements, your neighbor’s all set with a key to get in and water your plants. All that remains is to pack your bags and show up at the airport. Before 2001, this meant just stuffing your bag the evening before and getting yourself to the gate. Now, all carriers with an exit or landing point in the U.S. At random select a percentage of each flight’s passengers for vigorous security screenings. Casual and careless packing won’t do.
Here’s a quick rundown of what to pack in an accessible manner and what not to pack, to make your air travel experience smoother and less stressful. Remember, everything on your person or in your hand is scrutinized before boarding. Checked baggage is screened too. When you’ve scheduled your air travel tickets, check with the airline for its carry-on bags size wants. There is no negotiating here. Ordinary items for air travel transportation become extraordinary in the eyes of a security inspector.
Toiletries in gel, liquid or aerosol form must be packed in boxes of 3-ounces or less. All the individual containers must fit inside one clear plastic, quart-size zippered bag.
If your 3-ounces of shampoo are in a 4-ounce container, or you’ve used a gallon bag, out it goes in the trash! Be prepared to pull these items from your bag at the safety checkpoint for another inspection thru the xray machine. Toiletries are simply got just about anywhere worldwide, consider buying on arrival at your destination.
This also saves cleaning up the foams and liquids that can douse the contents of your bag under cabin pressure during air travel. If you are carrying change in your pocket or jewelry items, pack these in clear plastic bags for easy inspection and save yourself a hassle. If you’re carrying medications, stash these separately in your carry-on and ask for a visible inspection, unless you do not mind them being x-rayed as well. Security now requires that shoes be x-rayed as well, so select a slip-on pair for air travel. When taking young children, fold up that stroller as you approach the security checkpoint and bag the basket contents separately. Some common items are always on air travel no-fly list. Scissors, metal nail files, clippers or knitting needles are forbidden and will be tossed by security.
You can purchase these items on arrival. You may free up valuable packing space by simply eliminating them from your packing list. Leave the kid’s toy knives and guns at home too. For the most recent complete list of items that are inspected or banned, check the govt. Site at http:www.tsa.gov for guidance. You’ll save time, hassles and be better prepared and less stressed for your air travel!

Staying In The Isle Of Harris In The Outer Hebrides Of Scotland
Staying on the beach for the whole of my vacation has never been my my thing. Please do not get the wrong idea, I do enjoy a relaxing visit to a sandy beach, but, I also like to explore a little inland too. I like to soak in the atmosphere, I really like to indulge in the local foods and sampling the culture. If the truth be known each year I enjoy visiting new places and I try very hard attempting to find somewhere or something 100% unique and different. Most probably this is why I so thoroughly enjoy visiting the Hebrides island named the Isle of Harris and why I regularly decide to book self catering cottages on Harris.
The Isle of Harris is a small island situated off the west of Scotland. The island is only one of hundreds of little islands known widely as the Outer Hebrides, although to be one hundred percent accurate the postal address is the Western Isles. Accepted as either/or the Western Isles or the Outer Hebrides the islands are incredibly beautiful and amazingly unique. For folk who need to spend time relaxing on a sandy beach the island of Harris has plenty to choose from and all are wonderful and frequently deserted. It would seem as though beyond corner you are greeted with a truly awesome sight. The Isle of Harris roads are completely different to those found on the Scottish mainland stretches of single track road are common and you will need to know how to use passing places to safely let past traffic from ahead and also from behind. Just keep it in mind that you pull over to the left. However, if it is an extremely large vehicle wishing to get past you and the passing place is on your right hand side you may tuck yourself into it to allow the vehicle pass more easily but at all time take care not to drive off the edge of the road too much.
One of the main reasons people visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the islands landscape and culture. The Isle of Harris culture has, throughout history been powerfully influenced by the Scottish, English, Celtic and Norse races. These days in general most folk speak in the Gaelic language and although some talk in English, it is most likely their 2nd language. The Harris folk are amongst the friendliest on our planet and their hospitality is well known across the globe. The people of Harris are extremely proud of the amazingly beautiful Harris countryside and try very hard to keep the place tidy and clean so it is incredibly important clean up after yourself.
All along the south west coast of the Isle of Harris you will find some of the most breath takingly beautiful beaches in all of Scotland, and many folk say the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The waters are extremely clear and it is a fact that the Harris beaches are lovely and clean. Sadly there is no way to avoid debris washing up from Atlantic shipping but happily there is little.
If you are thinking about having a short break Harris the why not think about staying in a self catering house on the Isle of Harris please visit http://www.isleofharrisselfcateringhouse.co.uk/
