The Outer Banks is a hundred miles of amazing and storm pounded barrier islands off North Carolina’s mainland. Perhaps you want to just choose one area, pick that as your home base, and cruise the rest of the Outer Banks from vacation central. No problem, the whole Outer Banks area is accessible and just there waiting for you.

One way to look at a vacation is to start at the overview stage and work your way down to the fine detail level. Kiteboarding has become one of the biggest activities of the area. Kitty Hawk, know as the home of the Wright Bros first flight. first flight in 1903. Wright Brothers National Memorial is one of over 390 parks in the National Park System and well worth a visit.

Outer Banks, Ronoake Island

Ronoake Island is interesting in its own right. Tucked in behind the barrier Islands it offers a different experience all together. This is where there was one of first attempts to establish colonies in the new world and it failed. Some of the must see attractions are; the Roanoke Island Festival Park, which combines history, shopping, art, and music into a wonderful experiance, the North Carolina Aquarium, the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens and the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site which will give you a glimpse into the area’s history and the legend (and live play) of the Lost Colony.

For the majority of visitors Ronoake Island is a day trip from other Outer Banks vacation areas but you may want to consider a Manteo vacation rental. It is one of those rare vacation locations that is in a walkable vacation community, offering arts events, great shopping, mouth watering restaurants, and fun attractions. There are great bed and breakfast Inns here and so you can extend your day trip for a few days. It will be well worth your while.

Outer Banks, Hatteras Island

If the Northern Beaches were the center of the action, Hatteras Island offers a more laid back, getaway from it all vacation area. This must see, wild, breathtaking area is located in the middle of the 70 mile Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This is the place to go to if you enjoy nature and the outdoors. The Pea Island National Wildlife refuge is a bird watchers ultimate dream location. Even though it feels like an secluded island retreat you still have vital ammenities that you need. It is just a quieter, relaxed vacation experience.

If you love it outdoors then you will love it on Hatteras Island. It feels much different from the northern Outer Banks even though it has many of the same vacation offerings. However, Cape Hatteras, on the whole, presents a much more relaxed atmosphere. It’s more relaxed, and definitely slower paced.

Almost 75 percent of Hatteras Island is still in the natural barrier island state, with fabulous sand dunes, great beaches, lush maritime forest and vast marshlands. Luckily, much of this outdoor vacation paradise is accessible to the public for activities like fishing, water sports and observing nature.

While you are there make sure to visit the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. This historic Lighthouse is the tallest in the USA.
