Smog Tests and Used Cars
In the economy we live in, most families are going to choose to buy a used car rather than a new car.
With that in mind, there are going to be a lot of financial considerations that go into place when buying a used car.
When I mention about the financial considerations, I am not only talking about the sales price.
When you are a family looking to save money the last thing you want to do is buy a used car with extra expenses you weren’t prepared for. Especially if those extra expenses were not in your budget.
So one of the important things you need to be aware of is smog checks. The last thing you will ever want to do is having to make expensive repairs because of a failed smog check. I have seen too many used cars in my San Diego auto repair business have this happen.
So when buying that used car here are some things to consider.
Under a 2005 law that was passed, if you have a 1976 vehcile or older, you will not have to ever take a smog check. But if it is newer than that your vehicle will be tested based on the state emission law.You can search about your state by contacting the Bureau
of Automotive repair at (800) 952-5210.
If you live in California and are buying a used car you may need a San Diego smog check. If it is being sold or registerd in California for the first time, you will need a smog check.
Other than that, if the vehicle is going into it’s 5th or 7th year, a smog check will need to be done biennially.
If you bought the vehicle in another state but live in California, you will need to find out if the car can pass a smog check. In general California is a lot more strict.
With that being the case, keep that on your mind when making a purchase of a new vehicle.
Costs for a smog test San Diego generally run between $30 to $80.But as stated above, that is not the biggest expense. The biggest cost will be if costly repairs are needed.
So when purchasing the used car, make sure you find out if the vehicle has recently passed a smog test.
You don’t want to get any unexpected expenses cropping up all over when the idea was to save money when you bought that used car.
Follow these tips when looking into that used car and you will save yourself a lot of money.
Brake Maintenance is Important
One of the things taken for granted in this world is driving a car.It has become second nature and routine and to some extemes a mindless activity for some people. You see people talking on the phone, doing makeup, reading, etc. while driving.
But if you really thought about it, your life is on the line everytime you drive a car.Whether it is your fault or someone else’s, accidents happen.
One of the causes of accidents, although rare, is brake failure. Your brakes are one of the most important parts of your vehicle.Unfortunately, if it’s out of sight it is out of mind. I have seen this firsthand with my San Diego brakes shop.
Your brakes definitely qualifies as out of sight. But it is the one part of your automobile that you have to regularly maintain. Whether you do it yourself, or hire a San Diego auto repair shop, you have to maintain it.After all, your’s and your family’s life and safety depends on it.
With that being the case, it will be relatively easy to maintain your brakes. You can either go to a brake repair shop or you can learn how to do it yourself.
Either way, the two main things you need to look at are the brake fluid level and the brake pad condition. If you are diligent in maintaining these two points, you will keep your brakes safe.
When you do perform a brake fluid check, all you have to do is find the fluid reservoir level. It has a mark that says ‘min’ line and ‘max’ line. Make sure it isn’t below the ‘min’ line and you should have no problems.
Also be sure that you see that the brake fluid is yellow in color and clear. If it isn’t, you will have to perform a flushing of the brakes and put in new fluid.
Brake fluids are easy to maintain. The hard part of this will be the brake pads. For this, more often than not you will need a brakes repair company like my San Diego brake shop.
Usually the brake pads tell you they need to be replaced when you hear some screeching sounds when you are braking.
If so, get them checked and if need be, replaced as soon as you can. Brake pads are difficult to control or stop if it is worn.
With your safety and any passengers safety on the line, this is a no brainer. Get it checked and if need be, get your brakes fixed.
Taking and following these 2 maintenance tips will help make sure your car is safe for all driving occasions.
Ways to pass a smog check
In our time we live in, the car is practically a life necessity next to food and shelter. And the way the economy is currently, everyone wants to keep their cars a little longer.
Well when you find this happening and your car is older, it will be time to learn some things in regards to car maintenance. I have learned them from owning a San Diego Smog Check shop
One of those things is when you have to go and get a smog test for your car. Until your car hits seven years old, most people don’t even think about it.
But be warned, if you do fail the smog check, what was supposed to be a small $50 smog check suddenly turns into a huge auto repair bill.
When you have to have your car pass the smog check so you can renew the registration, follow these bits of advice to ensure your car passes the smog check.
So before you visit a smog test San Diego only center follow these tips.
First, make every effort to ensure your vehicle is running right. If your vehicle is not running correctly, get it to an autor service shop as soon as possible so they can see if their is a problem. Then fix it, prior to a smog test.
Second, an easy but necessary tip, take a drive.Remember passing the smog test means your car needs to burn fuel efficiently with as little or no smog emmissions a possible.Because when the car has not been propery warmed up, it will not have the proper combustion you need. If that happens, you stand a chance of failing.Just drive it for a few miles, 10-15, and you will have it running as optimally as possible when you bring it in.
Third, start using fuel additives. This you do when you are filling your auto up with gas. You just add it to the gas tank. What’s going to happen is this gets the emmission levels lower because it cleans the intake of your car and exhaust paths. This makes it possible for the fuel and air to freely flow.
Fourth, inflate your tires to proper pressure. This little tip will help your vehicle drive with greater stability and accuracy during the smog test. This greatlly improves the emmission’s overall output because it helps the engine maintain a steady load.
Finallly, change your oil.If the oil in your car does need to be changed and is contaminated, this can be a cause of failure when you take it for a smog test. Oils that are contaminated have high hydrocarbons and that will cause you to fail the test.
Follow our guidlelines and tips and you are going to have a good chance of passing the smog check with flying colors. Take it from my experience running a San Diego auto repair service shop.
