Teva is one of the most famous sandal manufacturing companies in the industry today and it was founded and owned by Mark Thatcher. While working in the Grand Canyon as rafting guide, Thatcher spotted that most of the boatmen used to wear hiking or athletic shoes while in the river and he himself wore thongs or flip flops.

Mark Thatcher decided to spend some time to design a sandal which was in the shape of a thong but had a nylon ankle strap to support the foot of the wearer. It was fortunate that Velcro material came up almost the same time when Thatcher was searching for an alternative to thongs. He used Velcro to bind the sandal with the wearer’s foot with a strap of Velcro around the ankle. With this sample in hand, he knew that he did not have financial resources to start manufacturing these sandals on his own and that he needed to find a manufacturer.

In the first year of their production, he succeeded in selling only 200 pairs designed by him. This was because many people complained about the thong style straps of the shoes while some got blisters in between their 1st and 2nd toes due to the straps. In the following year, youngsters of America noticed these sandals as fashionable footwear and their sales increased over night.

In the same time, Mark Thatcher became partners with Deckers Corporation and finally, Deckers also achieved exclusive rights to Tevas along with their patents for basic design. They also received Tevas trademark as a brand name.

A re-designing of the Tevas was done by Deckers in 1988 and a new strapping system was also developed, following which Hurricane, the first model in this line, was manufactured. There were three parts in this new system of strapping: the toe post, the side strap and the heel strap. This design is still followed by the sandals produced by Teva even today.

All the sandals produced by Teva today are very comfortable to wear and are free from causing any foot related problems for the wearer. The soles of these sandals are harder and thus, they provide better grip to the wearer while walking on wet surfaces and even while in water.

The balance is probably a bit better on the thin linered versions, but they don’t seem quite as solid – perhaps that’s just in my head.

Darren Chard Mokume Damascus Wharncliffe: Here I have another peice by Canadian Knifemaker Darren Chard. I still consider Darren one of the best least known knifemakers out there. Everything that comes out of his shop is perfect. His fit and finish is among the best, bar none. He is also always up to a challenge, and creates knives because he enjoys it, not because it is profitable.

Spyderco Cricket FRN C29 Knife: Since I reviewed the Ying Yang cricket I wasn’t going to review this FRN cricket, however this one is plain edged, and different enough I figured I would at least give a short review of it. The Cricket is definately one of the more popular ladies knives available, and due to the blade shape, works very well with textiles.

Mike Obenauf Small Model 2 Custom: This is a customized Model 2 Framelock from the now defunct Mike Obenauf. Though this knife is extremely similar to the other Model 2 framelock I reviewed last year, I felt that I should review it partly because Mike has also retired from knifemaking, and this peice is rather unique.

Cold Steel Hatamoto Folding Knife: My opinion of Cold Steel’s knives has changed a bit with the recent acquisition of a couple of Cold Steel folders. The Hatamoto is the first of these Cold Steel knives that I have acquired, and comes from their high-end line they call their “Custom Series”, and feature their mysterious and somewhat gimmicky San Mai III Steel.

Raidops LJ3MP Fixed Blade Knife: This Mini Tactical Knife from Raidops is very well made, and when I saw it, I had to have it. Raidops knives are made by a fellow named Kim from Korea, and he offers a product that is quite unique. When I posted the review of this knife on Youtube, I had a few viewers complain that a 2 1/2 inch blade could not be tactical.

CRKT E-Lock Bronze Folding Knife: Among most knife Collectors, CRKT has the image of being an entry level brand that uses entry level cutlery steels, and affordable materials in the production of their knives.
