Advice on auto repair and smog checks

One of the duties every car owner has is having to maintain it’s engine. If you choose to not maintain your car regularly you will end up having expensive auto repairs for your car.  If you really neglect it bad enough you might even fail a smog check. With the consequences of failing a smog check also comes auto repair costs that will be expensive. Or you might even not be able to drive your car.So we shall take a look at some things you can do to help you avoid having some of these problems happening to you.

First of all as mentioned in the previous paragraph you have to keep proper maintenance.  All my clients of my auto repair San Diego shop I stress to them how important it is to bring their car in regularly.  Regular maintenance allows us to find problems before they get big.And like most things including auto problems, the sooner it is fixed, the less you will have to pay.

Another thing I stress is to make sure they change their oil regularly.  Failing to do that is sometimes the root cause of why my clients fail in my smog test San Diego service shop. But if they do consistently this one thing, they will have a car that runs smoother. In addition an engine that is well oiled generally lasts longer.

Finally the part of the car that is overlooked a lot of the times are the brakes.  This is one part of the car that is always used but often overlooked.  Whenever a customer of mine brings in a car to my San Diego brake shop it is sometimes one of the most expensive repairs. So I emphasize the importance of taking better care of it in the future.  Doing things like keeping it’s fluids level correct will help.

So those are some things you can do to help your car avoid expensive auto repair charges.  Plus they will also help you make sure you pass your next smog test.

How the information age affects used cars

Buying and selling used cars is a huge business.  In a time when finances are tight for a lot of people it will grow bigger.People nowadays may need to sell the cars they can’t afford. While people looking to buy a car will choose a used one instead of a new one.Maintenance records are very important especially now in the information age.  Mainly because used cars records are so easily viewed.Cars that has been taken good care of will fetch more money. So it will be very important to maintain your cars.

You may have probably seen those car commercials where the buyers want to look at the maintenance records of the cars. That is not so surprising. As more people learn of this service the would want to avail of it too.So if you have plans on selling your car then you better keep good records. Whenever I service any client at my auto repair San Diego shop I make sure they always get a record of their service. The number of clients that think that this is not important may surprise you.

It is very important.  For example with stricter smog laws you don’t want a car that hasn’t been maintained well.  I get cars in all the time while checking them at my smog test San Diego shop who fail because of improper maintenance. Cars that pass these smog tests are the cars that are usually getting regular tuneups. The cars that usually fail are the cars that are not ususally maintained.

It also applies to the brakes.  By not maintaining your brakes can turn minor brake jobs into expensive ones.  Just by doing regular maintenance for my clients at my San Diego brakes service I have been able to save them hundreds if not thousands on extra expenses. And it might also save your and others lives by taking care of these brakes.

So in this information age make sure you keep a record of all service. It will be able to help you in the long run.

Smog Tests and Used Cars

In the economy we live in, most families are going to choose to buy a used car rather than a new car.

With that in mind, there are going to be a lot of financial considerations that go into place when buying a used car.

When I mention about the financial considerations, I am not only talking about the sales price.

When you are a family looking to save money the last thing you want to do is buy a used car with extra expenses you weren’t prepared for.  Especially if those extra expenses were not in your budget.

So one of the important things you need to be aware of is smog checks. The last thing you will ever want to do is having to make expensive repairs because of a failed smog check.  I have seen too many used cars in my San Diego auto repair business have this happen.

So when buying that used car here are some things to consider.

Under a 2005 law that was passed, if you have a 1976 vehcile or older, you will not have to ever take a smog check.  But if it is newer than that your vehicle will be tested based on the state emission law.You can search about your state by contacting the Bureau
of Automotive repair at (800) 952-5210.

If you live in California and are buying a used car you may need a San Diego smog check.  If it is being sold or registerd in California for the first time, you will need a smog check.

Other than that, if the vehicle is going into it’s 5th or 7th year, a smog check will need to be done biennially.

If you bought the vehicle in another state but live in California, you will need to find out if the car can pass a smog check. In general California is a lot more strict.

With that being the case, keep that on your mind when making a purchase of a new vehicle.

Costs for a smog test San Diego generally run between $30 to $80.But as stated above, that is not the biggest expense. The biggest cost will be if costly repairs are needed.

So when purchasing the used car, make sure you find out if the vehicle has recently passed a smog test.

You don’t want to get any unexpected expenses cropping up all over when the idea was to save money when you bought that used car.

Follow these tips when looking into that used car and you will save yourself a lot of money.
