Using Regional Airports

Flying is not always as much fun as it could be. We often find ourselves spending a lot of time at airports and this is rarely enjoyable, even if we’re flying for leisure purposes. Most of the leading airports to do try have a lot of shops and retailers within the terminal buildings, but many of us know that it remains difficult to keep a family entertained. What can we do about the situation?

It might be possible for you to think about not flying at all. There are a few options available that might make this possible, such as having holidays closer to home or using different forms of transport. But such options still won’t be perfect for everyone. It may be that you need to travel long distances on a regular basis and have little choice but to fly. In that case, have you thought about whether you could take more flights from your local airport?

At first, that may seem like an extremely strange suggestion. Regional airports will often be smaller and are likely to have a far smaller collection of shops, bars and restaurants. Surely they would be an even worse place to spend time? The reality is that using a regional airport is often far quicker than making use of the larger airports. I’ve seen this for myself when flying from the likes of Exeter, Southampton and Bournemouth. The airports at each of these locations are considerably less crowded than at the major London hubs.

It means that you spend less time in queues, or waiting for security checks. You can also avoid having to arrive hours before your flight. But the advantages don’t stop there. I’ve also found that using a more local airport is a great way to cut down on my total travelling time. I can often shave 2 or 3 hours from a journey by opting to use a local airport, rather than making my way up to London.

A really big concern for many people is whether using a regional airport will mean paying a lot more money for flights. It’s certainly a concern that I initially shared, although I soon came to realise that flights were often cheaper from regional airport, as a result of the lower taxes. It certainly makes sense to use a local airport if you can possibly do so.
